Mobile payment providers GoPayment and Square saw a lot of growth in the last year and are expected to become even more popular in the new year.
For starters, Square has over 1 million U.S. merchants offering its mobile payment app, according to a report from Daily Deal Media. That’s one in eight merchants in the United States, the report adds.
Last month, Square was sold at 9,000 retailers. That number jumped to 10,000 this month, Daily Deal Media reported. Square is offered at certain outlets of OfficeMax and the UPS Store.
The company is not limiting itself in select targeting but is keeping an open mind. “We haven’t defined a lot of how people are going to use them,” Square leader and Twitter (News - Alert) co-founder Jack Dorsey was quoted by Daily Deal Media. “We don’t want to make Square all about taxi cabs. And we don’t want to make Twitter all about celebrities and politicians.”
Square has already sold over 800,000 card readers and sees $2 billion in payments a year, according to a report from The St. Louis Post Dispatch carried on TMCnet.
Musicians, massage therapists, restaurants and craft fair vendors are among the businesses most interested in Square, the Post-Dispatch adds.
In addition, Intuit (News - Alert) – best known for providing TurboTax and QuickBooks – said its GoPayment offering will be offered globally. Intuit says the GoPayment mobile credit card app and card reader will be offered in Canada. Other nations are expected to follow. Daily Deal Media says the GoPayment offering for Canada and a new GoPayment card reader will be offered early this year.
Also, GoPayment added it will accept credit card payments on an iPhone (News - Alert), iPad or iPod touch device, according to a report carried on TMCnet.
