Twitter (News - Alert) made its displeasure clear when Google announced on Tuesday that it will change the way people search the web once again. The social networking company says that the changes are bad for both consumers and webmasters.
Twitter is a microblogging social network that allows anyone with an account to broadcast short blurbs of text to several followers. The company is now saying that Google's (News
- Alert) new changes will make it more difficult for people who want to find breaking news. “As we've seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter.
As a result, Twitter accounts and tweets are often the most relevant results,” said Twitter, in a statement published on its website. “We're concerned that as a result of Google's changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that's bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.”
Twitter's statement was rather timely – only a few hours after Google announced its changes, which would introduce more social features to search results. The search engine result pages (SERPs) on Google will soon include personalized results related to the keywords a Google user types in the search bar, including profiles of Google+ users. It seems like the company chose a very bad time to introduce these changes, as it currently is under pressure from governments due to supposed favoritism of its own services on search results.
Google replied, saying, “We are a bit surprised by Twitter's comments about Search plus Your World, because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer.” Indeed, Twitter's agreement signed in 2009 with Google let the search engine show real-time updates from Twitter on its search results. The agreement expired in July 2011.
The changes that Google is making allow more Google+ profiles and pictures to appear on the website. If, for example, you type “Computer” in Google's search box, you'll see results with photos of a new computer someone bought and put up on Google+. This might raise some eyebrows as the struggle continues to put Google in its place for what might be a manipulation of search results.
