Apple's Upcoming NYC Event to Focus on Publishing and iBooks

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Technology news site TechCrunch reports that iPhone (News - Alert) maker Apple is planning to hold a products event in New York City sometimes this month. TechCrunch writer Alexia Tsotsis seems to have confirmed the news. However, TechCrunch is working on gathering more details like the exact day, time and location.

According to a source close to this media event, reports TechCrunch, the Apple (News - Alert) event will focus on publishing and eBooks sold through Apple’s iBooks platform. As no new hardware products will be announced at this upcoming Apple event, representatives from the publishing industry are expected to attend this event.

Tsotsis wrote that the event will reveal improvements to the iBooks platform, Apple’s e-publishing platform.

Likewise, DigitalTrends’ reporter Andrew Couts does not expect to see iPad3, the next generation tablet, or Apple’s much hyped iTV at this event. However, according to Couts, the announcements at the forthcoming Apple event will involve Newsstand, Apple’s digital bookshelf and marketplace app. Similarly, DigitalTrends is also anticipating changes to the iBookstore, a revamp of iAd, or possibly a new iTunes video subscription service.

With the iBooks app, available as a free download from iBookstore, the user can download, organize, and read ebooks on any iPad. Apple said that iBooks are fully compatible with VoiceOver, so ebooks can be read aloud in any of 21 languages offered. The company also said that the user can tailor iBooks to suit the way he or she would like to read. Hence, it will allow you to read in either portrait or landscape orientation, according to the user. Additionally, iBooks also allow the user to select different font sizes, as well as white-on-black text setting.

In a blog post, Apple said that iBooks will become available to read on Mac laptops and desktops. Hence, Apple is ready to enter the e-publishing market and compete with current players like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
