Vertu Debuts $200 USB Cable

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Nokia (News - Alert) has a “luxury” subsidiary called Vertu, who will now be offering customers a brand new USB Cable for a hefty cost of $200. Vertu was established by Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia in 1998.

The concept of the haute-couture mobile telephone company was approved by the executive board of Nokia, and was designed to tap into a niche market of mobile devices with price tags rivaling ultra-expensive luxury watches.

The corporate headquarters of Vertu was later set up in England in 2000 and the first phone, the Vertu Signature, was launched in Paris in 2002.

Though the company’s future is uncertain, as rumors fly that Nokia is trying to get rid of Vertu, they are still delivering high-end products to that limited niche. Vertu has released a data cable, featuring high speed USB 2.0 for $190. With tax and shipping, that’ll head well over $200 for a cable you can buy online at other retailers for around $2.

Vertu’s profit, as part of Nokia, isn’t public yet, but the paper estimated that the company annually brings in anywhere between $268 and $402 million.

Casey Chan, writer for Gizmodo, said he has never understood the concept behind Vertu. “I’ve long been over the ridiculously overpriced-ness of idiotic Vertu phones. Three hundred grand for a dumb phone? Whatever, the stupid rich who spend that stupidly are beyond saving anyway,” he harshly writes.

Chan said there is no way he would spend $190 for a USB cord, saying that there is no perfect combination of technology and jewelry that would make it worth it.

“Even if it’s made from the indestructible, dry aged umbilical cord of Megan Fox, or sprinkled in diamond dust so it could be worn like a necklace, or lined with God-endorsed electrical wiring, it’s just impossible to justify that price tag (News - Alert),” said Chan.

Most of Vertu’s products will set any customer back. A standard lithium-ion battery will set you back $90, while the V Collection Bluetooth Headset – which looks like a futuristic gadget costs around $790.
