Android Holding #1 Spot, According to comScore

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

The latest stats from market researcher comScore says Android (News - Alert) is ahead of iOS and RIM is slipping down.

This is about as surprising as news of the sky being blue. It’s a no-brainer because, simply put, there are more Android devices compared to an iPad, iPod Touch, and an iPhone (News - Alert). It’s comparing oranges to, well, apples. At least, literal Apples.

Details of the report say RIM’s share of the US smartphone market weakened during the three months ending in November, as Apple’s (News - Alert) iOS and Google's Android platform both made some leaps.

RIM’s subscribers fell to 16.6 percent at the end of November from 19.7 percent at the end of August, according to comScore.

Android took the number one spot, clocking in at 46.9 percent share of the US market at the end of November, up from 43.8 percent.

Apple's share was up 1.4 percentage points to 28.7 percent.

Last year’s fourth quarter, marked for Apple a successful period. Apple sold 16.2 million iPhone on top of the 7.3 million iPads. This year, analysts expect this figure to be nearly double for the iPhone sales, and iPad should hit the 12 million units sold mark.

iOS and Android activations reached 6.8 million on Sunday, Christmas Day. According to Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google (News - Alert), “there were 3.7 million Android devices activated on 12/24 and 12/25”.

As CNet tells us, the “jump in Android activations can be followed just by reading Rubin’s tweets over the past year. On December 20, the Google exec tweeted that more than 700,000 devices were being activated each day, up from 500,000 devices in late June and 300,000 in December of 2010.”

Rubin also said that device activations for Android have reached 700,000 units per day. Earlier this year, in July, the reports showed Google’s Android activations were at 550,000 per day. A report by the NDP Group showed that Android based smartphones now represent a 53 percent market share from the beginning of the year to the end of October. Meanwhile, Apple’s market share is at 29 percent.
