Startup Nimbula's Cloud Migration Service Enables Enterprises To Move From Public to Private Cloud

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Initially, many organizations start their online operations on a public cloud infrastructure like Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) environment because it is cost-effective and does not require any capital investment for building infrastructure. Plus, public cloud accommodates an organization’s growth plan. But, after some experience, these companies have a better understanding of their workload characteristics. And, therefore, they are now ready to move some of that workload to private or a hybrid cloud to cut operating expenses, as well as build an internal private cloud that compliments public cloud footprint.

Eyeing an opportunity in this cloud migration trend, cloud operating system startup Nimbula has launched Cloud Migration Service. Nimbula said that its newest professional service is designed for customers looking to migrate from the public cloud to private or hybrid clouds.

In a press statement,  Nimbula’s director of professional services, Nishan Sathyanarayan said,  “Customers love the flexibility and self-service aspects of public clouds such as Amazon EC2. They often want those same benefits and control in a deployment model that uses both their own and public infrastructure. The only way to achieve the proper cloud economics in that case is to leverage commodity clouds and layer infrastructure and application services on top of them.”

He added, “By providing the technical design and migration plan, our customers can confidently execute a seamless migration into a robust and cost-effective private or hybrid cloud solution and balance their investment in public clouds.”

According to Nimbula, it’s Cloud Migration Service enables organizations to build a commodity cloud inside their enterprise without any of the expensive investments usually associated with traditional premium enterprise clouds.

Because every company has a unique need and application pain points to address, Nimbula is offering a series of private and hybrid cloud professional services. In order to enable each customer develop cloud strategy that is most effective for it, each service provides a comprehensive plan that includes technical and operational analysis. One such offering is Nimbula Director Jumpstart package, which is designed to help customers make the most of their existing or future cloud investments, said Nimbula.

Early this month, Nimbula was named the overall most innovative cloud provider at the UP 2011 Cloud Computing Conference, held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. This conference was sponsored by IBM, Microsoft (News - Alert), PwC, EMC and Amazon Web Services.
