Twitvid Launches New Features, Letting Users Follow Others in Social Network Setting

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Twitvid is adding new features that let it offer a unique social network, according to news reports.

Users can now follow people, topics or select brands. Users can also use the site to watch YouTube, Vimeo (News - Alert) and Twitvid videos. Later, it will let users post videos from wherever they may appear on the web, Mashable reports.

In addition, users can make sub-channels or “private channels” on specific topics, according to news reports. These can be followed by visitors, and users can restrict posting if they desire, Mashable said.

Venture Beat explains that in the past Twitvid was limited to uploading videos for sites such as Twitter (News - Alert) and Facebook.

Started in 2009, it now has more than 12 million unique visitors a month. Twitvid also currently features celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Al Gore, John McCain, Tyra Banks and LeBron James.

The new improvements to the Twitvid site are considered by Mashable as a “threat to social web video platforms such as Shelby.TV and VHX” more than a site like YouTube (News - Alert).

“We want this to be a place where you can talk and watch at the same time,” Twitvid CEO Mo Adham was quoted by Mashable. “You follow a different set of people here than you would on Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter.”

In the future, Twitvid will support Hulu and Blip.tv, Adham told VentureBeat, and there will be more “social features that will allow people to watch the same videos at the same time.”

“Great video doesn't exist in one place, on one channel or on any one device. We live and breathe it every day by capturing and watching it on phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, TVs, notebooks and on thousands of websites," Adham added in a statement carried by TMCnet. "People want to watch compelling video but they don't want to go out and personally find each and every clip. Twitvid is built as a true network where the single purpose is to make it drop-dead simple to discover, share and discuss great videos, regardless of their origin, format or device."

In other company news, Twitvid recently raised close to $7 million in funding from Azure Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, according to a report from TMCnet.
