Steve Jobs to be Immortalized in Budapest as Bronze Statue

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Steve Jobs (News - Alert), co-founder and long-time CEO of Apple, who passed away two months ago, will be immortalized in a Budapest park. A Hungarian software company that claims they owe all their success to Jobs has decided to erect a 7-foot bronze statue in his honor.

Jobs became the visual face of Apple (News - Alert), and a leader in pushing the boundaries of technology. Fans would wait yearly for his annual WWDC presentation of upcoming gadgets, software updates, and new products that Apple would be releasing within the year.

Graphisoft told SMH, Jobs represented a leader of the future. “Steve not only understood where the world was going, he shaped it’s future,” they said.

Hungarian businessman, Gabor Bojar, chairman of software company Graphisoft, said he feels indebted to Jobs. “He was a true leader whose greatest achievement lay not in what he created himself, but in what he was able to inspire his people to achieve. He found the best people and inspired them to do wonders,” said Bojar.

Bojar told Reuters that he met jobs almost 30 years ago and found him entirely inspirational.

Sculptor Erno Toth, who is doing the heavy lifting, is basing his 440-pound statue on a photo of Jobs presenting an iPhone (News - Alert) on the cover of an old issue of The Economist. The statue will depict Jobs in his standard uniform: a black turtleneck, a pair of jeans, and his glasses.

John Brownlee, from Cult of Mac, said he finds the statue disturbing. “In my opinion, this statue designed by Hungarian software maker Gabor Bojar is absolutely petrifying,” said Brownlee.

Toth hopes to deliver the statue on Dec. 20. Last month, Hungary’s postal service had issued a number of commemorative stamp-size images of Jobs.

Some fans of Jobs have showed concern that the statue is being erected in Budapest and not closer to his home, while other say it’s just a matter of time until statues start popping up all over the world in honor of Jobs.
