Is Apple Looking to Make Siri More Compatible With Other Apps?

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Since Siri was introduced to the world with the launch of the iPhone (News - Alert) 4S, developers and just plain old iPhone users have been looking for new and innovative things to do with the digital personal assistant. Some of the things that Siri is able to do are not exactly legal, like the ability one hacker was able to unleash which allows people to control others’ cars.

Siri has been such a wild success for Apple that Android (News - Alert) has already released its own version of this particular app, with a name that is just close enough to Siri that no one will ever be confused about its goal. Of course, Apple (News - Alert) has always been good about knowing exactly when the company needs to upgrade its equipment in order to stay ahead of the competition. It appears that Apple is getting ready to upgrade Siri, if a couple of classified ads can be believed.

The user interface manager for Siri, Dan Keen posted two different job listings on the iOS Developer feed that would vastly improve the way Siri works as well as allow it to work with other apps. While this upgrade is still in development, it appears that Siri will also be able to support other languages, as well as improving its interface.

Apparently both of the job listings discuss Siri’s application programming interface (API). The API is the programming code that tells Siri how to communicate with other devices, services and potential apps. While there has apparently been some speculation that the tweaks to the API means that Siri will actually be opened to third party developers, others are quick to point out the opposite. The supposed changes to the API could simply mean that Apple wants Siri to interact more accurately or quicker with apps it already works with.

Should Apple actually open up Siri to other developers, it seems as though the personal assistant’s capabilities would be almost endless. If hackers are already figuring out how to control cars, one can only be excited about the possibilities that the app could do when Apple is actually allowing it to be edited.
