Facebook Rolls Out Timeline to Tiny Population of Facebook Users

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

When rolling out new features, Facebook (News - Alert) has had it fair share of snafus pop up. Perhaps that is the reason that the social networking giant has been so methodical when it comes to launching the Timeline (News - Alert) function. This particular Timeline function is one that has been talked about for quite a while now.

The wait has been so frustrating for some that they have actually taken to their respective blogs to blast Facebook for the slow pacing. Finally Facebook has moved Timeline out of beta, but if you're about to rush over and check it out …don't. Unless of course you live in New Zealand.

Facebook has announced that the island of roughly two million Facebook users will be the first to get the add-on, with the social networking site claiming the rest of their users will get it soon. This is not exactly great news for those who want to be using the feature any time in the near future. iPad users will probably remember that they heard similar comments about a Facebook app for that device for months before it was finally released late this summer.

It appears that 99 percent of Facebook users won't see this particular Timeline feature before the year is out. In an interview with the New Zealand Herald, a Facebook representative said that, “We're definitely taking our time with this one.” People who have been waiting for the feature for more than 10 weeks would probably agree with that statement.

For those who feel that something is better than nothing, there is apparently a way to get the Beta version of the Timeline. While the app is technically only available to developers, there is a way to trick the site into believing you belong on the list of those who have access. Simply set your Facebook to “developer” mode and then create a fake app on Facebook's OpenGraph. Once you have done this, you will be able to get access to Timeline.

For its part, Facebook is clearly using New Zealand as an English language test run for the feature. Facebook is being especially careful after their recent porn spam mishap.
