Hacker Creates Siri App That Manipulates Your Car

By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

Just when you thought technology was far from your reach, a simple hack in a Siri application on your iPhone (News - Alert) can control aspects of your car. Minister and application developer Brandon Fiquett created a plugin for iPhone’s Siri application that allows you not only to start your car, but also to lock and unlock the doors.

Fiquett’s modification allows you to interface with any car that has a Viper remote system and use the remote’s functions. If you frequently lock your keys in the car, this is can save you plenty of money which would otherwise be spent calling a locksmith to open your car and possibly damage its internal locking mechanisms.

Using the modification, you only need to say, “Start my car” to Siri and the AI module responds. Siri tells you, in her elegant voice, “One moment while I connect to your vehicle.” Once the connection is successful, you will hear the roar of your engine block. Siri not only starts your car, but also locks the doors, unlocks them, and pops the trunk.

If you’re wondering how this hack works, Fiquett created a “Siri proxy” plugin which connects to a PHP script that runs on his server. PHP scripts are web-based application scripts that allow you to view and manipulate the contents of a database, among other advanced actions.

This script interacts with a Viper SmartStart module and connects to the car in question. There’s no reason to worry about security, since the remote start module can only operate at a limited range, making sure that no malicious hacker can start your car or unlock your doors.

In other news, a video has been leaked online that demonstrates Siri adjusting a thermostat with the power of voice. Much like getting up to physically change the channel on a TV, gone are the days of getting up to manually change the temperature in your own home. Just shout orders at Siri. Job done.
