Twitter Quietly Tweaking its Search Function

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Twitter (News - Alert) is trying out a brand new feature for their social networking site and they are doing it without much fanfare accompanying it. Twitter has been trying to change the way certain people view the social networking site.

Some retailers have been using the site to reach their customer base in different ways, either by offering giveaways or by taking greater advantage of celebrity endorsements. Now the site is tweaking the results that will be returned when someone does a search on the site.

Searching for a specific person, such as Herman Cain, will return the Presidential candidate's official Twitter account at the top of the page. On the right side of the page, the account will pop up as the first selection in the “People results for” section.

When looking for a particular news story, the search will operate much the same way with one big tweak. It appears now that what links are returned will depend quite a bit on just how popular the person who originally posted it was, as well as how many people retweeted it.

This new search algorithm appears that it will benefit the major web publishers and more popular bloggers than the old Twitter search did. The way that Twitter works right now, before the change is made official is to show the story but also mix in comments from Twitter users about the story.

This new search could weed out a great deal of these types of comments when Twitter users are just wanting to find a story. Of course, there may be a reason that Twitter has not made these impending changes very public and that reason might be because they haven't decided on just how the algorithm is going to work.

Twitter has also recently launched Twitter Stories, which is a large collection of high interest or emotional stories that come from celebrities and regular users alike. The stories are short, sticking with the Twitter theme and people are being encouraged to submit their personal stories to @twitterstories. Stories that include video or a link to the larger story will be considered first.
