Companies Look to Ditch BlackBerry

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

It seems the enterprise is looking to ditch the BlackBerry (News - Alert) devices; at least 30 percent of them will.

According to a survey conducted by Enterprise Management Associates (EMA (News - Alert)), in enterprises of 10,000 or more employees, the plan is to switch to a new platform. Why the switch from a tried and true device?

EMA’s survey shows that a lack of user satisfaction is to blame for the wanting to jump ship. A mere 16 percent f BlackBerry enterprise users said they were “completely satisfied” with their devices. 44 percent of iPhone (News - Alert) users said they were completely satisfied with their phones.

“We expected to see some market share loss by RIM, but these results were far more dramatic than we could have anticipated,” says Steve Brasen, EMA's managing research director. “Both enterprises and employees indicated they were broadly abandoning BlackBerry devices for primarily Android (News - Alert) and iOS platforms, and this data was collected before the recent BlackBerry service failures, which can be expected to even further accelerate migration.”

EMA also says this will lead to a significant reduction of RIM's market share in large enterprises, which currently stands at 52 percent.

RIM is trying to stay on top of its Android and iOS competition, as the company announced its plans to launch a new operating system to woo customers back to its platform.

“Today I'm pleased to announce our next generation platform, BBX,” said  RIM's co-chief executive Mike Lazaridis.

BBX offers real-time mobile experience to customers, as the platform will include BBX-OS, and will support BlackBerry cloud services and development environments for both HTML5 and native developers.

Despite the announcement, RIM is facing some legal woes in regards to the name BBX. A company by the name of BASIS International Ltd. has taken legal action to preserve and protect their longstanding ownership of the BBx trademarked operating system independent language, database, and toolset.

RIM’s press release announcing a new BlackBerry operating system named BBX is causing great confusion for the worldwide BASIS community and could potentially harm BASIS' reputation for enabling cross-platform application development.
