Emergency Communications Integrator to Deploy Pilot xMax Network from xG Technology

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

PC3 Communications, a San Ramon, California-based emergency communication and disaster response developer, has placed a $55,000 sales order with xG Technology (News - Alert) for a variety of xMax networking equipment, including a mobile switching center, xMax wireless access points and xMod mobile data end-user devices.

The order represents a commitment by PC3 to deploy and evaluate a pilot xMax network, which xG says is the world's first carrier-class cognitive radio network. By leveraging free, unlicensed spectrum in the 900MHz ISM band, xG's initial commercial radio system provides carriers and operators with the ability to deploy profitable fixed and mobile services by minimizing network and operating costs.

Basically, xMax allows companies like PC3 to deliver a licensed spectrum experience at an unlicensed spectrum price, achieved mainly through advanced cognitive networking techniques. The end result for PC3 should be a cost-effective, carrier-class emergency network communication system aimed at disaster management personnel that includes voice and data capabilities.

“As an integrator and developer of rapidly deployable communication solutions for disaster response, we are excited about offering the xMax cognitive radio solution to the disaster response community,” John Wray, chief technology officer of PC3, noted in a statement. “xG's solution will allow them to reliably communicate in an otherwise impaired environment.”

Wray told Urgent Communications that the radio network will be of particular use in emergency response situations when interference becomes an issue.

“The ability of xG Technology, with their xMax product, to have a cognitive-radio function that would allow the communicators to communicate in that type of a heavily contentious environment is very attractive to us,” Wray told the news source.

xG has inked a number of purchase orders with both domestic and international communication providers, but the PC3 deal stands as the company's first-ever agreement in the public safety vertical. xMax networking technologies have also been successfully tested and trialed by the U.S. Army at two of its domestic bases.

The broadband-enhanced xMax equipment will be delivered to PC3 in 2012.
