Most of the luxury sedans and cars on the market today boast their ability to give you a quiet ride, but on the contrary, BMW has a much different, innovative plan for its all-new 2012 M5 sedan.

The ever-popular German car manufacturer wants to ensure that you can hear the roaring sound of its powerful V8 engine at work. As a result, the company has developed a way to pipe a motor soundtrack right through the premium sound system inside the cabin. That way, you can hear the exciting sound of BMW’s eight cylinders while you drive. How’s that for an exciting ride? After all, most car enthusiasts seem to enjoy the purring sound of a powerful engine from the inside of a luxury sports sedan.

Here’s how it works. The M5 has an onboard computer that monitors the state of the engine, pumping a mimicked engine sound through the car’s audio system.

As you give the car more gas, the soundtrack changes to match sound of the engine when you rev it up. For its new 2012 M5 sedan, the car manufacturer wants to ensure that you can hear the sound of its powerful V8 engine.

The company calls the new audio feature “Active Sound Design,” and it’s just one of the many new tech features the new car offers.

For example, the car comes equipped with a twin-turbo V8, 560-horsepower engine. However, with a sticker price of $93,000 it looks like only the most dedicated BMW sports vehicle fans will get a chance to sit behind the wheel.

It may seem like a strange idea to pump fake engine noises into the cabin of a luxury sedan, but BMW seems to think that hearing the engine at work enhances the whole driving experience.

In a recent press release, A BMW spokesperson said, “In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system, giving the driver an extremely accurate impression of the engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8’s high-performance characteristics.”
