United Nations Debuts Mobile App to Engage Users in its Efforts

By Linda Dobel, TMCnet Contributor

The saying goes that there is an app for everything—now the United Nations is doing its part to make sure that’s true.

In a news announcement today, The United Nations (UN) revealed that it has launched a mobile app that aggregates news feeds that come from many of its agencies and programs and sends them in an integrated stream, in real-time and in six languages, to users of the Android, iPhone/iPad and Windows Phone (News - Alert) platforms.

The announcement explains that users, including the visually impaired, who can use a voice-reader feature, can choose which topics they’d like to follow from the UN.

The app is reportedly part of an effort by the United Nations Foundation to make use of mobile to boost philanthropy as well as public interaction and advocacy. Aaron Sherinian, VP communications and public relations for the UN Foundation, commented, “When we engage with people on a daily basis, they are more generous and giving, because they are more informed. We are taking a 360 approach to mobile."

Among the United Nations Foundation programs and campaigns that users can support with their new app are: Nothing but Nets; Girl Up; the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves; the Better World Campaign; and the United Nations Association of the USA.

The United Nations Foundation was formed in 1998 as a result of a $1 billion gift from Ted Turner. It is a public charity aimed at helping to decrease child mortality, providing empowerment to females, developing new sources of energy, promoting peace and human rights as well as sparking health-related technology innovation.

The new app fits in with The United Nations Foundation’s use of modern technology to promote its efforts. It was reported to have recently used SMS to allow subscribers to receive text alerts about issues in which the UN is involved including climate change and poverty.

Sherinian concluded, “Mobile allows us to have a relationship with people on a daily basis — some people want that so why not engage with them that way.”

The announcement of the new mobile app was met with fanfare from Kiyo Akasaka, UN under-secretary-general for communications and public Information, Singer-Songwriter and UN Messenger for Peace Stevie Wonder as well as Monique Coleman, a star in Disney's (News - Alert) High School Musical and UN Youth Champion during an event held in New York today.

In other news, TMCnet reported, “Mobile app downloads will increase 144 percent during 2011 compared to last year, according to a research firm study.”
