Twitter, Bing Exchange Compliments as Relationship Continues

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Bing and Twitter (News - Alert) have exchanged compliments with each other via Twitter – as Bing extended its two-year partnership with Twitter.

The partnership lets tweets appear next to Bing search results, Mashable said.

Google (News - Alert) and Twitter had a similar deal but the introduction of Google+ -- the company’s new social network – led to Google not extending its contract with Twitter.

Here are some of the recent tweets between the two companies, as reported by The Huffington Post.

Twitter: Been thinking about our last 2 yrs together. Instantly tapping into the wisdom of the Twitter community. Good times. ^bb

Bing: Totally! Search w/o Twitter = old news. You & @MSN are amazing at using Tweets to make search better & help people stay in the know.

Twitter: Let's say we stick together and do bigger and better things? ^bb

Bing: We’re in. Can't wait for what comes next.

But not everyone saw the benefit of tweets appearing with search results.

TMCnet’s David Sims commented, “all the invaluable wisdom of tweets now clogging up search results.”

All Things D reported how the deal was important to both Bing and Twitter. “Without a deal, the San Francisco microblogging service would be without two major paid distribution outlets for its full live stream of user tweets, a significant source of its revenue to date,” All Things D said. “Bing — which is waging an expensive battle in a search arena dominated by Google — has the opportunity to be the only major search player with extensive access to social data from both Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter.”

Google was important to Twitter, too, added All Things D.

“Google’s distribution is significant to Twitter (and obviously much larger than Bing’s), and tens of millions in revenue actually matter quite a bit to Twitter’s bottom line,” All Things D said earlier this year shortly after Google backed out of the deal with Twitter.

Twitter “didn’t expect Google to actually walk away,” All Things D reported, citing unnamed sources.
