Sony's Android Tablet S Launches in September

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Sony’s new Tablet S – the company’s first Android (News - Alert) tablet – will launch in September.

Among its features, the Tablet S has a NVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor; .3 MP camera in the front and a 5 MP camera in the back; and it can be used with Sony DLNA TV. The Tablet S comes with either 16 GB or 32 GB, which are $499.99 or $599.99 respectively. A 3G version will also be released. The Tablet S also features a 9.4-inch screen.

In addition, the Wi-Fi-only version runs Honeycomb 3.1, and the Wi-Fi+3G version runs Honeycomb 3.2, according to BusinessInsider.

“Sony’s tablets are quite different from the other Android tablets on the market, which generally follow the iPad's design philosophy,” said a review from Mashable.

The tablet also has a wedge-kind of design. “The wedge works in some situations, but it's unhelpful in others. Instead of a confident step forward in tablet design it's more of a hop to the side with a little twist,” commented Engadget in its review.

“The flimsy feel of the device just doesn't inspire confidence about the thing's durability, and the few scuffs on our screen – though small – are disconcerting given the existence of technology that makes displays seemingly impervious to attack,” Engadget added. The review points out that the surface that covers the screen is not Gorilla Glass.

“As with all Honeycomb tablets, it basically comes down to whether this one is clearly better than the identically priced Galaxy Tab 10.1,” according to the Engadget review.

Sony also announced the Tablet P, which will launch with AT&T (News - Alert) during November.

“These devices truly represent the best of everything Sony has to offer,” Mike Lucas, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' Networked Technology and Services Division, said in a company statement carried by TMCnet. “From hardware to software and services, Sony Tablet devices embody all our innovations rolled into one.”

The Sony Tablet S can be ordered by pre-sale on Wednesday and will on shelves in September, Sony said.
