East Coast Earthquake Rocks Social Media Sites

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Managing Editor

If you live along the East Coast, you may have just felt the after effects of a 5.9 earthquake that hit Virginia this afternoon.

Reports of the quake have been made in Washington DC, New York and even in Connecticut, where TMC (News - Alert) headquarters is located. But surprisingly, aside from text messages, phone calls and an influx of Internet reports, everyone’s first reaction was to jump on their social media platform of choice to tweet, update their status or blog about their experience.

Residents of California and other regions of the U.S. that are used to earthquakes are probably shaking their heads out of the frenzy the mild earthquake has caused, but give us a break, this kind of excitement isn't something us New Englanders get to see (or feel) everyday.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t seem to keep up with my Twitter and Facebook (News - Alert) streams that are updating faster than I can refresh them with tweets and statuses regarding the unexpected earthquake.

According to a tweet put out by MediaBistro, Twitter (News - Alert) has easily been the number one news sources for the latest breaking updates since the earthquake hit.

Stay tuned to TMCnet as details of the earthquake progress.
