Twitter Adds User Galleries

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Tired of just microblogging your day away in 140 characters or less? Do you feel that your Twitter profile could use, say, a photo gallery, much like your Facebook (News - Alert) profile? Well, now you can.

Twitter users can now spice up their user profiles with a new “Image Galleries” feature that puts together a user’s last 100 pictures uploaded to their Twitter (News - Alert) stream, and presents them on one page, and in chronological order.

“The images included in user galleries can come from Twitter, yFrog, TwitPic, Instagram and other image sharing services supported in Twitter’s details pane,” Twitter said.

This feature began rolling out in June with the help of Photobucket (News - Alert) hosting and is now available to all users.Only images dating back to Jan. 1, 2010 will be included in the feature. Video thumbnails will not be included, while tweets with video links will not be included in user galleries, it added.

A separate article on tech site Mashable said the update ties into Twitter’s photo-sharing push and will dramatically change the appearance of Twitter profiles.

“Galleries will provide equal billing to images shared via third-party app makers, but also serve to remind users that Twitter is no longer a place just for 140 characters — it’s for photos too. The update is likely designed to entice Twitter users to add more photos to their tweets,” reported Mashable.

Twitter points out that if you “Retweet” someone else’s Tweet that contains an image, it will not appear in your own gallery. However, it you manually Retweet (copy and paste) then the image will appear as yours, as it’s originates from your feed.

As per most Twitter roll-outs, only a few people can see the feature at the moment. Although it is being rolled out to everyone, it may take some time, potentially weeks.
