F5 Acquires Select IP Assets of Crescendo Networks

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

F5 Networks (News - Alert) has acquired select IP assets of Crescendo Networks. The acquisition came about through liquidation proceedings in Israel, where Crescendo Networks (News - Alert) is based. As part of the deal, several Crescendo employees are joining F5's office in Tel Aviv. F5 Networks focuses on Application Delivery Networking (ADN).

“We welcome members of Crescendo's engineering team to F5 and look forward to enhancing our industry-leading ADN solutions with their technology,” Dan Matte, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development at F5, said in a company press release. “In particular, Crescendo's intellectual property and technical expertise provide compelling layer 7 FPGA for hardware and security solutions.”

“With this acquisition, F5 will further strengthen its products' ability to address both the continuing exponential growth of Internet traffic and the rising number of sophisticated security threats impacting applications,” Matte added.

The acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on F5's quarterly financial results, the company said. They are scheduled to be announced on Oct. 25, 2011.

Crescendo was started in 2002. It offers hardware solutions for application delivery. The company has won several industry awards. The company was often honored for its innovations.

“Part of F5's secret to success has been its ability to leverage appropriate capabilities in either hardware or software to solve customer problems,” Lucinda Borovick, research vice president, Datacenter Networks at IDC (News - Alert), said in a company statement. “The Crescendo team had ambitious goals and developed innovative intellectual property for hardware. If F5 can leverage the best of Crescendo's IP, it should help them raise the bar for security and performance in the Application Delivery Controller market.”

F5 Networks focuses on ADN. It lets its customers take advantage of virtualization, cloud computing, and on-demand IT, according to the company statement.

In other company news, TMCnet reported that F5 has enhanced its application and data security solutions. The enhancement will provide customers with comprehensive security to prevent the loss of service and data, TMCnet added.

F5's new BIG-IP version 11 software can deliver a unified platform. The platform, protects Web 2.0 applications and data, secures DNS infrastructures, and also establishes centralized application access and policy control, TMCnet said.
