Take a STAND Against Sitting Down!

By David Vaughan, Director of Projects, TSG Global

How many times have we read postings from someone that includes ‘…as I sit here…?’ How many of you are reading this article while sitting down? Well, you’re going to want to stand up as you read this one, and possibly never want to sit down on the job again. Ok, that may be a bit much for a lot of you, but you will definitely want to sit less often.

I have enjoyed a variety of work environments in my life so far, much of which never gave me the opportunity for a constant comfort-controlled environment or taking a load off of my feet for what I use to consider ‘a nice cushy desk job.’ As the summer heat rolls on, I look at people working in landscaping and am thankful I am not being tortured by the harsh conditions they endure. I never imagined their choice to work outside vs. mine for a desk job could give them an extra 15 years of life over mine. Now I have to take a stand.

According to Medical Coding and Billing, that’s exactly what is happening to all the bipods that choose to sit on their rumps instead of standing up and living longer.   Think it’s too hard of work? Do you realize it takes more energy to chew gum than stand? Yep, that statistic along with others will make you rise up from that chair and take a stand to sitting down.

Personally, I have a bad back and sitting for long hours hurts. I have tried numerous failed remedies almost giving up, but then began reading articles and posts from others with the same back pain and opted to work with a stand up desk. I looked into the option of a stand up desk, and while many seemed nice, most were overpriced and did not offer everything I was looking for; so I made my own (for a lot less and got a lot more). Now finding this study just reaffirms I am headed in the right direction.

We are meant to be vertical, to move, to use what we have and not just sit around and let life pass us by…Take a stand against death.

Read over the infographic below and look around at some of the articles related to stand up desks or how to get more movement in your life. If you are interested in how my office turned out, let me know I’ll be glad to share pictures and advice (although I am no expert).
