5 Tips for Effectively Connecting With Your Employees

The last thing you want is for your employees to view you as a disinterested, compassionless boss. You should be a reason that they look forward to coming to work (not a reason they are thinking about quitting!).

The good news is that you have the power to create a welcoming workplace. By fostering meaningful connections, you will increase productivity and boost overall morale.

Not sure how to get started? Here are 5 tips for effectively connecting with your employees.

1. Participate in Team Building Events

There's a good chance that you already host team-building events. Whether it's a bingo night or a virtual magic show by Jon Finch, these events are the perfect way for team members to get to know each other.

But instead of just coordinating the events, you should join them and actively participate. You'll get to know your employees on a more personal level, which helps build a sense of trust. Plus, they'll get a kick out of seeing you when you're not in “boss” mode.

2. Hold Regular Meetings

We know what you're thinking — If I want my employees to like me, why would I hold more meetings?

It's true that many workers dread meetings. But if you do them right, they can be powerful tools for building meaningful connections.

Most importantly, regular meetings allow you to keep everyone informed. No one wants to be the last to know about important deadlines, events, or other matters. If a worker is constantly out of the loop, they'll feel like they don't matter.

Meetings are also a great way to field questions and address concerns. And during the time before and after the session commences, you can chat with everyone about more interesting topics. Just remember to make the most of every minute — if you hold meetings just to hold meetings, employees will feel like you're wasting their valuable time.

3. Solicit Feedback

Being open to comments in meetings isn't enough. If you want to build truly meaningful connections with your employees, you should solicit feedback.

Many managers ask for suggestions on how to improve the workplace. Go above and beyond by getting employee input for major decisions. It will show them that you value their vote, and because of their frontline experience, they often know what is best for the company.

4. Implement Feedback

It won't mean much if your comment box is just there for decoration. To show employees that you genuinely care about their input, you need to put it to good use.

Thank them for their input and make it clear how you will incorporate it in company matters. When employee input inevitably leads to success, ensure they know about it and reward them accordingly!

5. Give Employees More Responsibility

Studies show that 72% of workers want their bosses to give them more responsibility.

This statistic might sound strange at first, as it seems like these workers are asking for more work. But when you think about it, it makes sense.

More responsibility indicates that their bosses trust them. It also allows them to learn new roles, grow with the company, and beef up their resume. Most employees will be appreciative of the opportunity!

The Bottom Line — Show Up for Your Employees

As you can see, most of our tips don't involve grand gestures. Building effective connections with your employees is all about showing that you care. As long as you make a genuine effort and be responsive to their needs, you'll find yourself with a more cohesive team in no time.
