How to Give a Great Podcast Interview

Podcasts are one of the most popular mediums of communication nowadays, with big players like Joe Rogan and Marc Maron attracting millions in daily audiences.

That’s why being featured on a podcast is one of the best ways to market yourself and if you’re lucky enough to get accepted as a guest on a podcast then you want to make the most of the opportunity.

To help you along, we put together a list of considerations that you need to make in preparation for the podcast interview.

After all, you don’t want to just wing it on the day and you may have spent so much time on your pitch to the podcast host that you forgot the steps that follow after you’ve gotten accepted for the interview.

Just follow these steps and you’ll be ready to take on the world come the day of the interview!

1. Create a Connection with the Host

To make sure that they work well with the guest, most hosts will request a preliminary meeting prior to the actual show.

In most cases, this takes place just mere minutes before going live. This is a good time to establish a connection with the host and build some good rapport.

Keep in mind that the podcast host is like a train driver and you’re going to be in the passenger seat with him.

He needs to make sure that he’s going to be able to steer the conversation in a way that allows for the free flow of ideas and this can only happen when there’s chemistry between those doing the dialogue.

That’s why it’s worth your while to be proactive and do your part to establish a connection with the host.

2. Prepare Well in Advance

Preparation is key when participating in a podcast interview, even if you booked through podcast booking services. We reiterate this because there are some people who are more than okay with just winging it and you don’t want to be one of those people.

It can be incredibly frustrating for the podcast host to have an unprepared guest over because that makes his job harder and it can negatively affect your ability to establish some sort of relationship with him.

For best results, make sure to go over the show notes that you’ve prepared, brush up on your research about the host, eat a good meal, and go to bed at a respectable hour on the day before.

That way, you can wake up bright and early and arrive early and refreshed on the day of the podcast. You’ll be switched on and the host will see that you take this opportunity seriously.

3. Take It Easy

Most importantly, have fun with it.

After all, you’ll probably be talking about a topic that you’re an expert at and something that you love doing, so the conversation is probably just going to flow once the host has broken the ice, which is something that he’s good at doing due to years of practice.

Your job from that point on is to show up, be relaxed, and be yourself. Give it your all!
