Tips to maintain your hard disk drive and prevent sudden crashes

When you save or open a file, a lot of hard disk mechanical takes place. With a lot of valuable data and files stored in the hard disk, it can be horrifying if your hard disk drive crashes. If you do not wish to lose your data and files, you should keep an extra copy of the same on a different media to lower the risk of losing them.

Maintaining your hard disk drive isn’t easy, but the following tips should help you in achieving the objective and prevent sudden crashes too!

1.    Performing Disk Cleanup

Disk cleanup helps users to remove temporary files, which are no longer in use should be removed. It is recommended that a user run a disk cleanup at least once every month.

Downloading fancy utility software to clean hard disks is not recommended. Look for paid, official software for the purpose.

2.    Redundant software

Installing software or firewalls is a common thing, but many people make the mistake of installing too many of them that perform the same purpose. This affects your hard disk performance, and so you need to get rid of the redundant software and install only that software that is necessary for your operations.

3.    Manage startup

The moment your desktop or laptop starts, specific programs load during startup. Having unnecessary programs starting up every time your desktop or laptop starts, is not a good thing. So, you need to manage your hard disk startup. You can manage it by performing the following: Click on the Start menu, enter ‘misconfigure’ and go to the Startup tab. Uncheck programs that shouldn’t load during startup.

4.    Get rid of junk files

It is recommended that you remove all utilities, services, software demos, and free trials that are rarely used. You can always keep them stored in your external hard disk.

The same goes for the extra copies you’ve stored on your hard disk. For example, if you’ve three copies of your Jordan tours or a trip to China, you should keep one copy on the hard disk, while storing the other copies on your external hard disk or delete them.

5.    Disk defragmentation

If you notice that your PC or laptop is running slow, you should diagnose the hard disk to check whether the excessive disk fragmentation is the cause or not. Disk defragmentation helps in combining fragmented files on the hard disk drive.

Disk fragmentation occurs when the data is written to the hard disk, and there isn’t sufficient contiguous space to accommodate the file completely.

Concluding, it is essential that you keep your hard disk protected. The above-noted tips will help you in ensuring better lifespan for the hard disk and stabilize the performance of your hard disk.
