Wheelings & Dealings: M&A Week in Review: Zipmark, uBeam, Allegiance

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

What do you get when you combine an innovative payment platform with a leading accounting and billing solution? If you are Zipmark acquiring WorkingPoint, the answer to this question is an all-in-one payment platform for small to midsized businesses. The goal is to not only have a cost effective way, but also a fast way of sending and receiving funds. This appears to be a bi-coastal effort as Zipmark is located in Manhattan while WorkingPoint’s headquarters are on the West Coast.

One thing that I do not miss about traveling for business is the fact that I had to fill out expense reports. Attaching receipts and filling out the correct form for purchases and meals along with all the little things that pop up was nothing more than a hassle, which always led to a discussion. Abacus is a company that is trying to ease the burden by allowing you to take pictures of your necessary documents. This week, the company announced that it had raised substantial funding to make its presence more profound.

Another company that raised even more in a round of funding is uBeam. Wardenclyffe Tower, also known as the Tesla Tower, which began construction in 1901, was an early wireless transmission station designed by Nikola Tesla in Shoreham, New York. It was intended for commercial trans-Atlantic wireless telephony, broadcasting and proof-of-concept demonstrations of wireless power transmission. Today we are still looking for a way to wirelessly charge our devices. uBeam is setting out to deliver on Tesla’s concept, the difference being the use of ultrasound.

In the past year, Allegiance (News - Alert) Software has shown significant growth by increasing its workforce by 50 percent. This week, the company will expand even further by joining forces with a 900 employee customer experience company called Maritz Holdings Inc. This will lead to the formation of a new entity which will be called MaritzCX.

I am sure that we have all seen the Vonage (News - Alert) commercials on TV. Something that I did not know is that the name is a play on their motto "Voice-Over-Net-AGE." I guess that you really do learn something new every day! Vonage Holdings Corp. announced this week that it has agreed to acquire privately-held Telesphere (News - Alert) Networks Ltd. Telesphere is a nationwide Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) provider for businesses.

Every day companies all over the world are making deals, raising funds, or forming partnerships of one type or another. We try to keep an eye on these Wheelings & Dealings. Whether it is an acquisition or a joint partnership that benefits several companies, we will keep you apprised of all of the important details.
