Yahoo Makes a Primetime Move, Lands Katie Couric

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

Marissa Mayer is killing it! The Yahoo CEO has lured TV news star Katie Couric into its folds. Among other yet to be described job attributes, Couric will be starring in interviews on the Yahoo page. She will sport the unbeatably elite title of "global anchor," though Mayer is already calling her "the face of Yahoo News." Mayer herself announced the news in a blog on Yahoo called “Welcome aboard, Katie. Anchors aweigh!" Mayer is starting to sound like a true CEO in press announcements: as corny as Grandma's quilting patterns.

According to Mayer, Couric will "lead a growing team of correspondents at Yahoo News who will cover the world’s most interesting stories and newsmakers.” She added in a press release, that Couric "will work with our talented editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism.”

Mayer isn't letting on much, but that's how the game is played when you're gearing to be as successful as Google (News - Alert), and just about any other powerful corporation: don't show your cards, play them close to the vest.

Lassoing Couric, is a major win for Yahoo. It's not so much because Couric is famous and even, at this point, somewhat legendary in the field of news broadcasting, but because this news-focused approach distinguishes Yahoo from competitors, particularly from Google, which has been crushing Yahoo for years. Couric is a celebrity, and a more or less trusted broadcaster who connects with people of all ages. Advertisers will be enticed to lay down the bucks during her time on-air, at least in the beginning.

People are already scrutinizing the move, particularly questioning Couric's ability to transition into digital journalism in which thus far she has only dabbled. But her low level of experience in digital journalism doesn't make her a dubious candidate. She's a globally recognized news anchor who is going where, eventually, every anchor bent on a career will have to go: the way of the Internet.
