Five More Hackers Named on FBI's Most Wanted Cyber-Criminal List

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

The FBI is offering some $100,000 in reward money for information on five hackers who were just added to the FBI’s most wanted cyber-criminal list. That brings the total number on the list to 10 alleged criminals.

The 10 suspects are accused of hacking and fraud in the United States or elsewhere – resulting in hundreds of thousands of victims and tens of millions of dollars in losses, the FBI said in a statement.

“The cyber fugitives we seek have caused significant losses to individuals and to our economy,” said Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of criminal, cyber, response and services at the FBI. “Cyber crime continues to pose a significant threat to our national security.”

Just who are the five new cyber criminals? The list includes Farnhan Arshad and Noor Aziz Uddin, both from Pakistan, who are suspects in a $50 million hacking scheme.

Another suspect is Carlos Perez-Melara, who has lived in San Diego, Calif., and San Salvador, El Salvador. He offered to “catch a cheating lover” through Lover Spy malware. But instead, the technology he used installed malware which led to identity theft. The spyware pretended to be a greeting card, The BBC reported.

Still another suspect is Andrey Nabilevich Taame, who originally comes from Syria.  He was allegedly involved with infecting over 4 million computers in over 100 nations. And the fifth suspect was identified as Alexsey Belan, originally from Russia, who played a role in the hacking of three US-based businesses, the FBI said.

“Because cybercrime knows no boundaries, cybercriminals think they can hide overseas. But we are using our international partnerships and the publicity generated by our Cyber’s Most Wanted to ferret them out,” McFeely added.

"The FBI will not stand by and watch our cyber adversaries attack our networks," McFeely said in a statement quoted by Bank Info Security. "We will track down and arrest individuals who have made it their mission to spy on and steal from our nation and citizens."
