Google Recognizes a Smart Startup, Makes Another Acquisition

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

As the geniuses within the Mountain View, Calif., headquarters prepare to create a full-on computer-operated and computer-operating human (not to start rumors, but I think few will be surprised when this happens someday), Google (News - Alert) is taking steps in mastering gesture recognition. In doing so, the legendary tech mavens have added the gesture recognition specialty firm Flutter to their arsenal of acquisitions.

TheNextWeb broke the news of Google's acquisition, and shortly after, the San Francisco-based startup itself confirmed the news on its comic book-themed homepage in a jubilant post. "We are excited to announce that we have been acquired by Google," Flutter CEO Navneet Dalal begins in the post, before going on to detail the company's three year history devoted to "building the best machine vision algorithms and a delightful user experience."

Google later confirmed the acquisition to gigaom.com via a statement delivered by one of its spokespersons. The statement read: “We’re really impressed by the Flutter team’s ability to design new technology based on cutting-edge research. We look forward to supporting and collaborating on their research efforts at Google.”

Per the usual business of Google, who are known to scoop up bite-sized start ups with stealth and voracity, no details on cost or terms have been released. Reportedly, Flutter's entire staff is composed of six people that include four PhDs with expert skills in gesture recognition. Supposedly, all Flutterers will make the short pilgrimage to Google's headquarters to carry on their work under the tech behemoth's guidance.

Flutter's work hasn't reached the masses, so to speak (just how Google likes it), but it has definite clout. The startup published an app that lets users control media playback with gestures as recorded by their computer’s webcam. The company's work caught the interest of Gigaom's technology journalist Janko Roettgers. Last year, Roettger's wrote a piece about Flutter, suggesting that the developers were on to something big with their research and ambitions. Nice to see that Google got the memo.
