Facebook Offers Embedded Posts to All Users

By Michelle Nicolson, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Facebook (News - Alert) has made sharing your posts with non-Facebook users easier with its new embedded posts feature. Now users can share a Facebook post publicly on a website or blog by copying the embed code and pasting it into the code on their site.

Facebook follows other social media sites who have offered similar embedding features, including Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (News - Alert). After embedded on a website, viewers can interact with the embedded posts just like they were on Facebook, including the ability to like or follow the posts.

Embedded posts include the original photos and videos, just like on Facebook itself, as well as hashtags and other content. The embedded post also shows the number of likes, shares and comments on the original Facebook post.

The original Facebook post must be made public in order to embed the post on an external site. Any public post can be embedded, not just those from a user’s personal profile or page. Users can find the line of code needed to embed a post or video by clicking on the arrow in the post’s upper right-hand corner.

Facebook conducted a beta trial of embedded posts for last month to select Facebook users. The new feature rolled out for all users this week with some updates, including improvements to the way embedded posts look on mobile devices.

While Facebook reaps benefits from getting more people to interact with a post, there are also advantages to users who want to expand the reach of their Facebook posts. It’s convenient to embed a post in a website and expand the conversation to people who aren’t on Facebook.

Facebook also released an updated version of the Facebook plug-in for WordPress blogs that supports embedded posts.
