Yammer is Releasing Open Source SDKs for iOS and Windows Phone 8

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Yammer (News - Alert) is releasing Open Source SDKs (software development kits) for iOS and Windows Phone 8. Currently, there is no such open-source SDK for the Android operating system.

Yammer already offers SDKs for enterprise apps built on JavaScript, Python and Ruby.

According to Sidd Singh, a product manager specializing in social and cloud at Yammer, this newest move will likely quicken the development of mobile apps.

The SDKs will let developers add social services to third-party enterprise apps and will likely be used on either smartphones or tablets

“Mobile is transforming the modern workplace. Employees can find answers more easily, make decisions more quickly, and in general, move much faster,” Singh said in a blog post. “Here at Yammer Engineering, we believe in moving quickly. This is evident in the Yammer Platform, where developers can rapidly build social enterprise apps – apps that can scale to Fortune 500-sized companies.”

The SDKs let developers add Yammer OAuth 2-based authentication to mobile apps.

“Once authenticated, you can use the SDKs to make REST calls to read/write from the Yammer API, thus integrating the full spectrum of Yammer’s social services into your mobile app,” Singh said.

Yammer is a subsidiary of Microsoft (News - Alert), which took over Yammer in a $1.2 billion deal last year. ZDNet reports that Microsoft wants to see Yammer more integrated with SharePoint. Also, there could be a single sign-on between Office 365 and Yammer, the report adds.

What is the market like for this kind of offering?

“Microsoft also understands that for its service to find maximum integration, it has to be functionally open. Box, Dropbox (News - Alert) and others also understand this and have made similar steps to allow for deep hooks for their services inside other applications,” TechCrunch said. “Yammer competes with other companies, such as Convo, that provide internal micro-communication to teams both large and small.”
