YouTube Launches Video App, Contends with Vine and Instagram

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

For a society that absolutely loves to over-share every moment of our lives, we now have one more way to showcase our every little moment in motion, thanks to YouTube’s (News - Alert) co-founders’ latest video app.

Steve Chen and Chad Hurley have launched MixBit, a new video recording and editing app that, upon first glance, looks and acts like the Vine and Instagram video functions, but instead of just using short bursts of clips, users can paste up to 256 clips to make an hour-long video. It also allows users to remix videos of other users.

The social service is available for iOS.

"We have always been passionate about video. We started YouTube to make it easy for everyone to share videos. Now we want to help people make great videos," say Hurley and Chen.

"We are a community of creators. We believe everyone has something interesting to say. We give people fun, intuitive tools to help them tell stories together. We think video should be a living, breathing entity and that creativity is a collaborative process. More than simply capturing brief moments in time, we help people bring stories to life."

"You can also create videos without needing to shoot original content," reads the description on iTunes.

GigaOm reports that clips are also embeddable on third-party sites and there’s a kind of visual progress bar which shows which clips a Mix consists of and where they’re from.

MixBit is the first release by Avos Systems, an incubator founded by Hurley and Chen to develop new multimedia tools.

"We are experimenting with new forms of expression and collaboration through photos and videos, including removing technical and social barriers that prevent people from creating higher quality digital content, working on it with others and distributing it online," says the company.
