Ericsson Doubles Down on Commitment to Silicon Valley

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Ericsson announced that the company is moving forward when it comes to success in a wide variety of different computing solutions. To that aim, the company has decided that it will be housing its head of business unit support solutions, Per Borgklint, in California’s Silicon Valley. While this move may not seem that much of a gamechanger to outsiders, it does mean that the company is putting one of its top executives smack dab in the middle of the capital of the world’s computing world.

Hans Vestberg (News - Alert), the president and CEO of Ericsson, explained why his company decided to make this move in a recent release. "North America is the driver behind much of the innovation in the ongoing convergence of telecom, IT and media. Our operations in Silicon Valley, where the important ecosystem of software developers, media and other key players are present, ensure that we can fully explore the opportunities for Ericsson (News - Alert) across our entire business."

Borgklint added that in 2012, 20 percent of the Support Solutions for Ericsson were done in North America. The company believes that the acquisition of ConceptWave, Telcordia (News - Alert) and Mediaroom is showing that their North American operations are growing rather quickly. The move to North America will allow Borgklint to specifically oversee the way the company will roll out their products that have to do with these acquisitions.

Ericsson also said that the move to California means that the company recognizes that there is a growing importance to the company in managing operations directly from Silicon Valley. The company has specifically focused on tech services such as IP development and Smart Services Routers (SSR). The company has also run part of its Cloud solutions through their Silicon Valley operations. In total, Ericsson now has more than 15,000 employees in North America. 1,100 are located in Silicon Valley.
