Romanians Prefer New Smartphones

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Reports after reports say that smartphone and mobile device shipments around the world are always increasing. While most people think that these increases are coming from places like North America and the U.K., interest in new devices is also coming from some unlikely locations. A new report indicates that Romanians are among the group of people who prefer to buy new gadgets. The love of new gadgets comes despite the fact that most Romanians have a relatively low purchasing power.

In total, more than 80 percent of Romanians say the smartphones and tablets they own were purchased new. The ability to buy new gadgets is helped by the fact that Romanian telephony companies are able to offer up these new devices at deep discounts. That trend has been quite popular around the world. AT&T in the United States is offering flagship phones for half price off and Romanian companies are able to do do roughly the same with their customer base.

There is a group of Romanians who do buy secondhand smartphones, though they tend to be the ones who also buy pre-paid cards. These Romanians are more prone to saving money overall and their used smartphones are just the extension of that. There doesn’t appear to be a need to buy new phones when they are using these relatively cheap services. People who live in Bucharest also tend to buy new phones more often than second hand phones.

Smartphone users who go with a monthly subscription plan are also looking to buy new smartphones far more often than those who do not. These kind of preferences have driven the European smartphone market upward in 2013. In total, GFK, which put this particular study together, says that smartphone sales are up 13 percent in the the first half of 2013 compared to the same time period in 2012.
