Instagram Video Extremely Valuable, According to Avvasi

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Avvasi, a provider of Quality of Experience (QoE) management and monetization solutions, has announced that it is monitoring the impact of Facebook’s (News - Alert) new Instagram video service.

“It is amazing to observe the impact that a new video service can have on a network overnight,” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi. “Avvasi technology enables service providers to detect, analyze and monetize mobile OTT video in real time. When a new OTT video service can bring a network to its knees in seconds, it is crucial for operators to have the tools to measure, manage and improve the video experience. Avvasi is committed to helping carriers control and monetize the OTT video opportunity.”

While Instagram has been known for allowing users to take photos from their smartphones and apply filters to make them look like they were taken with an old film camera, the Facebook owned company has made a move into video to compete with Twitter’s (News - Alert) own Vine service.

Instagram seems to have taken a big bite out of Vine’s market, accounting for over 30 percent of the video shared over social networking services, eclipsing Vine and Google’s (News - Alert) YouTube almost overnight.

More than five million videos were uploaded within the first 24 hours of Instagram’ video service becoming available. Instagram adds some features including the ability to add the service’s trademark filters and the ability to delete video takes. Users can upload clips of up to 15 seconds.

Despite its popularity, not everyone is happy with the new service. John Gruber, author of the popular tech blog Daring Fireball, said Instagram video was “slow to load, noise I don’t want, bursts their bubble of simplicity and focus.” There was at least one redeeming feature for Gruber: “Thankfully there’s a setting to turn off ‘Auto-Play Videos’; otherwise I’d abandon ship.”
