In the past week I’ve been on six planes and visited four different airports, which means I’ve spent a lot of time reading everyone’s favorite magazine in the air – SkyMall. (Come on, you know you read it. More than 90 percent of domestic airline and Amtrak passengers do.) In addition to the items that make your animals more comfortable, traveling a little easier, home a little more organized and even the ones you never thought you needed, there were a few tech products that caught my eye.

Here are the top five tech items found in SkyMall right now (late Spring 2013 edition).

Cube 3D Printer - $1299

When I first saw this in the magazine it finally hit me that 3D printing is on its way to becoming mainstream among consumers. While I’ve been following 3D printing news for a few months now, my best friend traveling with me had no idea what I was so excited about. I had to explain how it works, what some of the latest developments were and what ideas are forming for the future with 3D printing.

Anyway, the Cube 3D Printer comes with 25 free files for designs, easy-to-use software for transferring your files to the printer, material cartridges with 16 colors and two available materials – recyclable ABS (News - Alert) and compostable PLA. It can print anything up to 5.5" x 5.5" x 5.5" or 140mm x 140mm x 140mm.

telyHD - $249 or $499 (Business Edition)

telyHD turns any HDTV into a high-definition video calling system, no computer required. It’s an “all-in-one” device that includes an HD camera, four noise-cancelling microphones, and the Skype (News - Alert) video calling application. Simply plug it into the HDMI port on your TV and you can call anyone – anywhere in the world, on any Skype enabled device including PCs, tablets, mobile phones and more. telyHD also provides video mail, photo sharing and digital zoom. The Gigastone SmartBox stood out to me just because of how often I was frantically searching for an outlet over the past week, desperately trying to stay connected. (That sounds pathetic – but I needed my power!) This product is a mobile accessory for both smartphones and tablets that offers a mobile power bank, wireless portable drive and Wi-Fi content streaming. Dubbed “every smartphone’s and tablet’s best friend”, the SmartBox is perfect for anyone on the go, with on-demand file sharing and content collaboration streaming from different mobile devices.

Zipbuds - $19.99

No more tangling! That’s the gist of these earphones. SkyMall is offering the JUICED earbuds, which are designed of “military-grade and aramid tinsel technology to provide strength and performance.” They’re available in black, blue, green or pink.

This is for everyone out there who has grown up dependent on technology, including on the road. Flat tire? No problem, I’ll call AAA. Lost? There’s a GPS for that. But let’s say you’re lost with no GPS, no service and AAA is nowhere to be found – you’re going to have to resort to the good old fashioned way and change your own tire. I don’t know about you, but getting to the part of jacking up my car scares me. (What if it loses support and lands on my head?) The Tru-Flate portable 12-volt hydraulic automotive jack eases this a little bit – all you have to do is push a button to raise more than 2,000 pounds. It raises a vehicle to a maximum height of 13 3/4” and features an up/down operating switch with a power indicator and a 13.5’ power cord.
