MySpace Official Relaunch out of Beta

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There’s another player in the social media scene, and this particular newcomer is actually one we’ve all met before. MySpace (News - Alert) has just relaunched its social networking service with a brand new design and a new outlook on life. This new launch, out of beta and to the masses is across a number of different platforms including mobile devices. The company is still trying to become more of a landing page for musical artists, which was the focus of the site when it went offline for what people thought was the final time a few years ago.

Back when social networking was new and different, MySpace was actually the king of the Web. Facebook (News - Alert) was the up and comer who was just trying to get a piece of the pie, and Twitter and LinkedIn weren’t really even in the game yet. These days, Facebook is the king and there doesn’t appear to be a real challenger around. Despite that fact, teens are claiming that they are looking for something new and different. Perhaps an old friend like MySpace could be that something different.

The new version of MySpace isn’t really geared towards taking on the big boys. Like Pinterest, this site is more about getting its own little piece of the Web, not taking over someone else’s. The service relaunched in January in Beta thanks to the help of minority investors like Justin Timberlake. Venturebeat reports that MySpace’s CEO thinks, “What we launched in January was a good first [example] of our vision of making MySpace the best place to listen and share musical interests, but [today's launch] is us taking what we’ve learned from our users and applying it.”

The new focus on music will allow for artists who are using the site to curate their own music. The site has access to a library of more than 50 million songs and artists will have the ability to put their songs on their own pages. The service has also launched an iOS app that is geared towards bringing in mobile users. Whether or not these changes can lead to a comeback is still anyone’s guess at the moment.
