BrowseReport Launches New Service to Monitor Children's Online Activities

By Brian Anderson, TMCnet Contributing Writer

BrowseReport, a Washington-based project specializing in monitoring online use, has launched a service that will give parents the ability to monitor a vast amount of their children’s online activities. The service aims to give parents the tools to get more involved in their children’s lives, and also help them make better parenting decisions when it comes to the World Wide Web.

The tool would allow parents to watch over everything from what their children are watching on YouTube (News - Alert), visited websites, Facebook and Twitter posts, and search terms used in any search engine. This gives the user further control over what their children are doing online compared to the past protection of blocking specific websites from being viewed.

However, many people, especially the children being monitored, feel as though this type of service is an invasion of privacy and would cause further friction in a family’s well-being. According to BrowseReport, as long as the children are aware that they are being monitored, it’s not bad for any family.

"I would never take my kids to a new park and let them run around by themselves for hours without supervision.  And I wouldn't call that spying, I call that parenting," Don Hyun, founder of the BrowseReport project, said in a statement on the company’s blog. “And I don't do it in secret.  Access to the Internet is a privilege in our home and my children know that I have access to all of their activity logs and history on all of our machines.  Because we often have frequent discussions about recent Internet searches, they know that I actively monitor these logs.”

With children getting more and more tech savvy – an estimated 37 percent of American teens have smartphones – the Internet is just another playground where parents protect their children from anything that can cause them harm.

Found in 2012 and located in Federal Way, Wash., BrowseReport aims to provide parents with the right tools and resources to learn about their children’s online activities.
