Kickstart Development of IoT Applications Using Wi-Fi BoosterPack

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

As the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes more prolific in the consumer world, the number of devices shipping with Wi-Fi inside is expanding at a rapid rate. To help professional engineers, hobbyists and others kick start the development of Wi-Fi-enabled IoT applications, Texas Instruments (News - Alert) has released a Wi-Fi BoosterPack, which is powered by SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3000 module.

According to TI, the SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3000 module is a self-contained wireless network processor that simplifies the process of implementing Internet connectivity. It minimizes host microcontroller (MCU) software requirements, making it suitable for embedded applications using any low-cost and low-power MCU. It also offers a complete platform that includes software drivers, sample applications, API guide, user documentation and a world-class support community.

To get designs started for a wide variety of MCU-based home automation, health and fitness and machine to machine (M2M) applications, the Wi-Fi BoosterPack supports both the MSP430 and Tiva C Series MCU LaunchPad evaluation kits. Similarly, to provide greater functionality, flexibility, peripherals and scalability, BoosterPack plug-in modules extend the LaunchPad's capabilities with LCD, LED lighting, capacitive touch, motor control, wireless connectivity and more.

Since the new BoosterPack is based on TI's Wi-Fi CC3000 module, it reduces development time, lowers manufacturing costs, uses less board space, simplifies certification, and minimizes RF expertise, said TI. Furthermore, TI said that the BoosterPack is armed with unique SmartConfig technology that allows for one-step activation of multiple in-home, headless devices to get them quickly connected to the Wi-Fi network.

For faster time-to-market, design engineers have access to a complete support platform through the CC3000 wiki, which offers details on how to get started, hardware design information, software examples and details, test and certification tips as well as community support resources.

The SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3000 BoosterPack (CC3000BOOST) is available through the TI eStore and TI authorized distributors. It retails for $35. In addition, the CC3000 BoosterPack is also being offered as a bundle on TI's eStore with the MSP430 LaunchPad evaluation kit and will soon be available as a bundle with the Tiva C Series LaunchPad evaluation kit.

The CC3000 BoosterPack with MSP430 LaunchPad sells for $40.99.
