Comcast is now the consumer distributor for iControl Networks, which is installing their program iControl Touchstone (News - Alert). Described as a “self-managed, self-installable smart home solution for broadband service providers focused on lifestyle services,” iControl Touchstone will be marketed under the name XFinity Home Control. The program serves both as a device-management program and Comcast’s (News
- Alert) foray into home security, as its components are inextricably linked to the Internet.
Once installed, security features of XFinity Home Control will be viewable on computers anywhere, and will include Internet-connected monitoring systems. These systems will include a live video feed and an event-driven video capture system, which is triggered by entering/exiting the house and other suspicious activity. This enables the occupant to see what is going on in the house when they are away. The user can also remotely control lights and appliances in order to save energy by turning devices off or to remotely run a device. They can also create alerts for user-designated events during the day such as the kids coming home from school or people leaving for work, as well as link to the user’s mobile device to send a text alert when the action takes place. Finally, the company also offers an energy-efficient thermostat and electricity monitoring systems for the devices, which should decrease electric consumption in the home when the occupants are not in it.
While the introduction of iControl Touchstone is definitely a new ground for Comcast, it already offers similar things in what they call XFinity Home Security. However, this new partnership with iControl is unique in the way it will revamp its infrastructure and make it more connected with all the other devices. It will also involve other aspects besides home security, which is a way to make its program stand out in the home security market.
