Nexmo will team up with Bandwidth to Utilize their SMPP Protocol

By Toni Sutton, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Recently Bandwidth, a provider of scalable voice, SMS and 911 solutions, has announced that Nexmo will be their new wholesale short message service (SMS) customer. Nexmo is a cloud based SMS API that allows you to send and receive messages of high volume at wholesale rates, and they are the first to join with Bandwidth. Together the will be using the favored messaging protocol in the wireless industry which is chat message peer-to-peer (SMPP) protocol.

Now that these two companies have come together, Nexmo will have access to the market in the United States. Their customers will now be able to use telephone numbers in the U.S., as well as send and receive text messages via software that is not available through their own cell phones.

CEO of Nexmo, Tony Jamous states "Our direct-to-carrier sourcing strategy and the onerous U.S. regulatory restrictions, expanding into the U.S. was going to be extremely difficult and time consuming. We needed a way to expedite this process, as it is a critical piece of fulfilling our goal to connect with all carriers around the world. Bandwidth seamlessly helped us overcome that significant obstacle. Their enthusiasm to support SMPP to meet our needs proved Bandwidth was the right choice for our U.S. expansion.”

Bandwidth’s SMPP based SMS service includes delivery receipt, which is significant because this feature recognizes when a message is being sent and received and is thus essential for Nexmo to be able to bill. Nexmo’s mobile app and web developer consumers can now actively communicate wherever they are in the world with anyone located in the U.S., without having to use a wireless headset.

Steve Leonard, general manager and executive vice president of Bandwidth, said “As the market matures, we continue to advance the way we develop and provide services to deliver the most sophisticated offerings. Supporting SMPP was a logical next step and the start of a renewed focus on robust SMS offerings for our customers.”

He added, “We have a great first customer in Nexmo who has a strong desire to combine its international coverage with its need to strengthen its U.S. position.”
