Tumblr Adds Sponsored Posts to the Dismay of Users

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

Currently, Tumblr users everywhere are sharing something without even having to reblog it: utter rage and panic. No, the site hasn’t gone through a complete and total overhaul after its acquisition by Yahoo – it’s simply adding more advertisements to its Web dashboard.

The sponsored-posts feature has been a part of the mobile app for a while now, but has just made its way to the Web dashboard. This includes posts brought to users by companies such as Viacom, Universal Pictures, AT&T (News - Alert), and Purina, among many others.

Tumblr users can reblog, follow, and like the advertisements as they would with any other post, and according to the company, sponsored posts are already receiving millions of reblogs. Admittedly, some of them are done so with captions complaining about the advertisements, but it’s still exposure for the companies.

Thankfully, for the sake of Tumblr users, they will only see up to four sponsored posts each day. They will also be marked with an animated dollar sign, indicating that they’re paid posts, so there are no attempts to trick any Tumblr users into thinking someone they follow loves the refreshing taste of Diet Cherry Soda Brand so much they have to blog about it.

“The engagement rates on the Tumblr Radar and Sponsored Mobile Posts have been spectacular and we have taken this same carefully architected approach to this new Web in-dash opportunity,” says Lee Brown, Tumblr’s Global Head of Sales. “The Tumblr post is a flexible, dynamic and expressive medium, and we are delighted to give marketers yet another opportunity to promote their content and connect with this vibrant and engaged community.”

Of course, that hasn’t stopped many users from freaking out and complaining, as people are wont to do every time something changes on a website they use. That said, sponsored posts and advertisements do tend to be annoying, so while they’re very likely to despise the advertisements and cause quite a fuss, as with all changes on any website, they’ll adapt and get used to it just in time for the next change.

Will advertisements drive away some Tumblr users? Quite possibly, but no more than the acquisition by Yahoo has already made them lose, which is really just a drop in the pond. Perhaps the additional advertising revenues will make up for the loss of users, although the company doesn’t expect to see any revenue from it until next year. Either way, the Tumblr blogosphere is making a lot of noise over the change, but if they’re as addicted to Tumblr as many of my friends are, they’ll learn to live with it soon enough.
