Google Changing Instant Messaging for the Worse

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Google (News - Alert) is one of those companies that is always changing the way it does things and the way it services its existing solutions. Some of these changes are welcomed, while others are proving to be upsetting for the search engine’s customers. At the Google I/O conference, the company announced a number of changes to existing products including its instant messaging client.

While the announcement of Google Music All Access was met with applause and excitement, the announcement that its instant messaging client would no longer be using Google Talk was met with groans of disapproval. Talk will be replaced with Hangouts and the solution will no longer contain open standards. Among the changes that are coming down the pike will be no longer having the ability to disable the archiving of all chat communications.

Open format, or XMPP instant messaging, was at one time fully supported by Google. That support meant that people could chat with others who were using different kinds of chat clients. With the move away from that, Google will be operating its chat in much the same way less popular clients like AOL and Microsoft (News - Alert) operate theirs. You will no longer be able to chat with someone through Google unless they are on Google as well.

The move also seems to be a troubling one for advocates of privacy on the Internet. While users can still choose not to archive their chat messages, they must now disable that archiving with each chat. That can be both bothersome and something people could forget to do. Because of Google making sure that you have to be on Google Chat in order to instant message someone else using the service, you can’t get around the new rules the way you could have in the past.

Plenty of people are frustrated about the new moves and claim that Google is taking a step back when it comes to its instant messaging solutions. So far Google doesn’t seem to be that worried about those frustrations.
