Amazon Appstore on Android Expands Availability with 5.0 Update

By Shawn Hebert, TMCnet Contributing Writer

In its continuing effort for online domination, Amazon has just released a new update to its Amazon Appstore on Android (News - Alert), making it available in nearly 200 countries, a far cry from the mere seven countries it reached prior to today's update.

To help in celebrating the launch, the Amazon Appstore will be bringing back the ever-popular free app of the day promotion. The promotion, as the name suggests, provides one free paid app per day. Mobile games “Fruit Ninja” and “Cut the Rope: Experiments” are available today and tomorrow for free, normally they cost $.99.

What else is new in the app? Amazon released a change log of its 5.0 software:

•International support for customers in Canada
•Support for nearly 200 countries, including Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa to shop in the U.S. store
•Support for additional EU countries, including Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Belgium to shop on existing EU stores
•Performance enhancements
•Other bug fixes and stability enhancements

According to the change log, the 190+ new countries added will leech onto the U.S. version of the Amazon Appstore while European countries will be governed by their own stores.

“We think our customers will love the app selection we have to offer and also find features such as Free App of the Day and personalized recommendations very helpful as they discover and explore new apps and games,” said Mike George, vice president of Apps and Games at Amazon.

The Amazon Appstore update comes off the heels of the announcement earlier this week that the company will soon be expanding the availability of the Kindle Fire HD 7 and the HD 8.9. The tablets are now available for customers in more than 170 countries around the world. Pre-orders began this week and the devices are expected to begin shipping on June 13.
