Flickr Gets a New Look

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

On the Internet, there is a battle between photo hosting sites, each aiming to draw in the most customers, and with them, advertising dollars. While the news of Yahoo acquiring Tumblr may have caught the media’s attention, Flickr (which is also owned by Yahoo) is making its move, with a new design and revamp built to make the photo uploading and sharing site even better.

With this new Flickr update, the site’s look and feel is completely changed. Rather than the boxes and bits of text, it uses a grid layout that features the pictures in full resolution. This makes the site more pleasant to look at and the pictures easier to see, offering a better experience for those just looking through an album or perusing vacation photos. The new photostream uses a justified format grid layout, including a profile similar to Facebook’s (News - Alert) “timeline” and options to check out favorites and sets.

Mobile users also have something to look forward to with this update. While Flickr’s iOS app was recently updated, the Android (News - Alert) one didn’t receive the same… until now. The new Android app has all the same features and quality of the iOS version, which users have found to be far superior to its previous version.

Even the amount of pictures one can upload has increased significantly. Each Flickr user now has one terabyte of free storage, or roughly 537,731 photos. Unless you’re a professional photographer, that’s probably more than you will ever need.

Of course, sharing is always an important part of the online photo experience, and Flickr still has that. Now that Yahoo owns both Flickr and Tumblr, it’s easy to share pictures from the former to the latter with the click of a button, as well as the other usual “share photo” options.

While the updates to Flickr are very useful for all its users, there are concerns that the site will have difficulty bringing in revenue, especially with competition from sites like Instagram. With both Tumblr and Flickr now working together under Yahoo’s rule, though, it still stands more than a fighting chance.
