Concerned homeowners everywhere are looking into home security systems, and homeowners who are also concerned about their wallets are increasingly looking into do-it-yourself versions. These types of home security systems generally only require homeowners to pay the cost of the video equipment used, as opposed to traditional security systems where owners are charged a monthly fee for an outside company to monitor the video feed.
Among DIY home security solutions, wireless security cameras are one of the most popular options, with interest in it growing 40 percent faster than interest in other types of home monitoring systems. However, users of these systems still have to pay the price for the equipment, which can be expensive. People Power, a software company that specializes in mobile apps, has recently come up with a way for DIY home monitoring to be completely free.
Due to consumers’ urge to always have the latest and greatest technology, many find themselves the owners of old versions of iPhones, iPads or iPods that they no longer use. People Power’s Presence app puts these gadgets to work as wireless video cameras, perfect for home monitoring purposes.
The app, which is free from the Apple (News

Presence can also be set up to automatically detect motion and send an e-mail alert to users when it is triggered, along with an accompanying video clip of the suspicious movement. The app can also be used for audio or video conversations between the two devices that it’s set up on.
Presence was just recently released in Europe, where it has quickly gained popularity, especially in Sweden, France and Spain. Chances are that the app will gain even more popularity as more people hear about it; after all, it is free, and many people are looking for ways to repurpose their old gadgets rather than selling them on eBay (News
