- Alert) Maps, one of the most successful and widely used apps ever created by Google, has received some mighty makeovers, Business Insider reports.
Google announced the improvements on Wednesday. The revamping includes a splendid full-screen mode, which should help with zooming as well as overall impact of routes and scenery.
The update has also ditched the side bar.
Users now have the option to customize the maps in new ways. They can, for instance, link to Google+ to receive recommendations on venues or other destinations from friends on the social network. This comes across as yet another play by Google to boost Google+ as a social must-have.
Google Maps, which the company says is integrated with more than one million websites, will integrate Google Now, which is basically Google's version of Siri, a voice-activated feature that aims to learn user habits and make smarter, more personalized recommendations for the user over repeated usage.
Perhaps the coolest change Google has made to Google Maps is in allowing viewers to glimpse the inside of select venues with a new feature that zooms into the picture and offers a 360 view of a place's interior.
Google has also added some 3D buildings that users can tour by zooming in on them.
There's also the welcoming of users to upload their own photos and add them to Google Maps.
By clicking on a specific area in Google Maps, road names and landmarks will automatically pop up, spurring the engine to recommend similar places.
The new and improved Google Maps is a lot like Google Earth experience when used through a browser. Users can zoom all the way out of a road view to glimpse the entire solar system.
