Twitter Buys Ubalo for Mystery Coding Process

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

Twitter (News - Alert) has acquired Ubalo, a company that provides a range of services that are aimed at speeding up the coding process. Befittingly, the social media network announced its acquisition in a tweet.

“We've got some exciting news: The Ubalo team is joining Twitter.”  In Ubalo's words, the form looks "to make large-scale computing easier and more accessible to a technical audience." The terms of the acquisition have not been revealed.

The privately held company's principle technology is "pods," which may contain code, data and any other files needed to support a developer's application. Ubalo's services look to scale code across multiple computers. So, when a user runs a pod, Ubalo handles the stuff going on beneath the surface.

Ubalo's site says “We hide the details of the computers, environments, and messaging, so our users can worry much less about integration and scaling and instead write just the code they need for their analysis or processing.”

Previously Ubalo has carried out projects to reduce the image processing time for an application that uploaded files to Amazon's S3 Web storage service, and retrieving and processing certain data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Of late, Twitter has introduced new products that look toward making its site more interactive for users, including an expansion to its Cards program, giving developers more options to embed content into tweets. Last month, the social network giant launched a mobile music app to tune into songs that were popular on the site.

So, how is Twitter going to incorporate Ubalo's technology into its back-end systems? Mum's the word for now. We'll have to wait for another tweet.

Ubalo has said more or less nothing on the matter as well, stated simply that it “looks forward to working with Twitter in the years to come."

Years? This could be big!
