Huawei Launches New CloudEngine Data Center Switch

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Cloud Computing

On the heels of deploying Vitesse Technology for cloud radio access trials, ICT solution provider Huawei (News - Alert) has launched the newest addition of its innovative CloudEngine (CE) series of switches, the CE12816, which company officials said provides the largest switching capacity in the industry at 64 Tbps.

The new switch is a step in ramping up Huawei’s leadership in the high-performance data center switching market. It underscores Huawei's commitment to lead the industry with solutions that combine high performance with energy saving technologies to greatly reduce total cost of ownership, according to Ian Foo, director of data center products and solution at Huawei Enterprise USA.

“The launch of the CloudEngine 12816 is the culmination of our vision to offer enterprises with an affordable and powerful data center solution that addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by cloud computing and ICT convergence,” Foo said in a statement.

The CE12816, which leverages Huawei’s VRP8 software platform, is designed to provide stable, reliable, secure, and high-performance L2/L3 switching capabilities to help customers build scalable, virtualized and high-quality data center architectures.

Like all the switches in the Cloud Engine 12800 family, the CE12816 provides support for 1, 10, 40 and 100 GE connectivity. To ensure that the CloudEngine supports multi-generational network investment, densities supported on the CE12816 include up to 192*100GE, 384*40GE, or 1536*10GE line-speed ports.

Huawei developed the CloudEngine series to handle challenges faced by data center networks in the cloud computing era, by providing stable, reliable, secure and high-performance services. The Huawei CloudEngine series switches comprise CE12800 core switches, as well as CE6800 and CE5800 TOR switches.

In other Huawei news, to facilitate field cloud-based radio access network (C-RAN) trials for mobile carrier China Mobile (News - Alert), the company is using Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation’s VeriTime technology, which provides IEEE1588v2 timing implementation for IP edge and Access networks.

C-RAN technology is expected to significantly reduce capital and operating expenses for service providers looking to achieve high capacity, power efficient and cost-effective wireless network, according to Dr. Chih-Lin I, chief scientist at the China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) in Beijing.
