The Legend of Low Latency

By Peter B. Counter, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Competitive online gaming requires sports-like training. There is no time to get to know the game, or try something out, or cycle through all of the sound clips that get played when you click on your little resource gatherer until you get to the really funny joke ones. People play these games to win, tracking and improving stats like actions per minute (APM (News - Alert)), which is the average number of clicks and keyboard strokes taken per minute during a match. Of course this is all augmented by equipment. Custom keyboards and gaming mice are available to help curve stats toward victory and minimize on carpal tunnel. There are even audio peripherals made to improve your game, but there is one crucial piece of the puzzle a gamer can have no control over: the speed of his or her connection.

In Brazil, gamers of the popular free-to-play game League of Legends don’t have to worry about their session lagging them to a sore defeat anymore. Level 3, a global communications provider, has teamed up with League of Legends creators, Riot Games, to put a data center in Sao Paulo with an Internet contract that includes hosting the competitive online game.

Currently, gamers in Brazil have to connect to a server in Florida to get their game on with League of Legends, which is a long trip for the data to take in order to process in-game actions. With the new server, Brazilian gamers will now have the luxury of much lower latency when playing the immensely popular game.

Originally released in North America in 2009, League of Legends launched in Brazil last August. Based on a Warcraft 3 custom map mod, the game has developed an incredibly dedicated and frighteningly competitive player-base. It is built on a free-to-play model, but as is becoming the trend with videogames of all kinds these days, players who engage in micro transactions so that they can play the game to their specific preferences and favorite characters every time, will be more disposed to victory. The game currently has 70 million registered players, 32 million of which are currently active, and thanks to Level 3 and Riot, they will soon all be very happy with their connection speed.
